The COVID-19 crisis highlights Amazon’s failure to protect people and the planet.

While other major technology firms have established data centers powered by 100% renewable energy, Amazon is still four years away from using 100% renewable energy and is encouraging fossil fuel companies to use Amazon’s servers to increase their drilling. The production and burning of these fossil fuels increases the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to climate change. Fossil fuels also create pollutants in the air that can exacerbate coronavirus symptoms, and cause heart and lung disease.

Workers in Amazon warehouses report grueling and dangerous working conditions. Workers are not being adequately protected with over 20,000 of them falling ill to Covid-19. Workers at Amazon, throughout the supply chain and in the office, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

Subject: Please Respect Workers and the Planet

Message:

As a concerned consumer, I write to urge Amazon.com to take constructive action to address climate change and treat workers fairly. Given the dire global implications of climate change, I believe it is urgent that every corporation do all it can to measure and reduce its carbon footprint. All companies have a responsibility to ensure company employees, and workers manufacturing the company’s products are provided with a living wage and safe working conditions Amazon’s climate footprint is equal to that of an entire country. While Amazon is now committed to 100% clean energy by 2025, other companies have shown it's possible to move to 100% renewable energy much faster, and to report out their progress on clean energy and climate emissions transparently. The climate crisis is impacting us now. We can’t wait 4 years for one of the world’s richest companies to catch up on clean energy. Amazon needs to: Clean energy and the environment: - Commit to 100% renewable energy within two years and end the construction of any new data centers that rely on fossil fuel or nuclear power. - End your efforts to sell AWS technology to the oil and gas industry to support increased exploration and drilling. - Submit complete and accurate data to the Carbon Disclosure Project. Workers’ Rights: - Meet all workers’ demands to protect their safety. Amazon should provide paid sick leave that is not limited to those that test positive for COVID-19 as testing in the US remains difficult to access. Amazon should also cover the cost of health care and testing for any employee or contractor that has potentially been exposed. - While COVID-19 puts warehouse workers' health at risk, Amazon should, at a minimum, continue its $2/hour pay increase and double overtime pay. - Develop and release a Restricted Substances List and a Manufacturing Restricted Substances List for all private label apparel. - Commit to ensure that garment workers in the supply chains of Amazon’s private label apparel brands will be paid during the pandemic. Do so by committing to the Clean Clothes Campaign’s wage assurance ask: https://cleanclothes.org/campaigns/pay-your-workers/covid-19-wage-assurance. - Ensure that companies manufacturing products for Amazon are in compliance with local laws regarding wages and hours, providing a safe work environment, allowing for unions, providing mechanisms for workers to raise concerns without fear of retaliation, and taking steps to move towards a living wage. As more and more consumers, investors, and AWS clients appreciate that Amazon is a laggard in addressing the climate crisis, worker’s rights, and toxic chemicals, they will look for alternatives to your company. I urge Amazon to build a cleaner and fairer cloud so that your customers do not have to choose between using the internet and preserving people and the planet. Thank you for your consideration,
