Tell Amazon to end Toxic Textiles and to respect all workers’ rights! Amazon has made record-breaking profits and become the largest US retailer of clothing. But, Amazon has NO publicly available information on its chemical management policy for its own apparel brands or for any textiles sold on its website.

Chemical exposure is a particularly pressing issue for workers, as 50% of occupational deaths are due to toxic chemical exposure. AND US working conditions at Amazon continue to be grueling. Injury rates are nearly double that of industry average with 24,000 serious injuries occurring in 2020 alone.

Subject: Amazon – Respect all workers’ rights!

Message:

I urge Amazon.com to take action to address the chemical impact of its own branded textiles and textiles sold through its platform, and to improve the working conditions for US workers. The chemicals used to manufacture clothing take a huge toll on people. Chemical exposure is a particularly pressing issue for workers, as 50% of occupational deaths are due to toxic chemical exposure. Amazon should expand its safer chemicals policy to address textiles for its own branded textile products & 3rd party vendor textiles. Amazon needs to respect garment workers: - Publicly disclose a Restricted Substances List (RSL) & a Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) by 2022 that is applied to all its own branded textile products. - The RSL & MRSL should include the elimination of all highly hazardous chemicals, including carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxicants (CMRs), & persistent, bioaccumulative toxic (PBT) chemicals. This should also include the elimination of all per- & polyfluorinated substances, toxic flame retardants, & ortho-phthalates. - Amazon should become a signatory to the Chemical Footprint Project (CFP) in 2021, participate in CFP on an annual basis, & allow for public disclosure of its score and answers to questions. - For 3rd party apparel brands, over the next year, Amazon should require all vendors to disclose which highly hazardous chemicals, including carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxicants (CMRs), & persistent, bioaccumulative chemicals, PFAS, toxic flame retardants, & phthalates are present in its products & the levels of consumer exposure. Within two years, Amazon should develop & implement a prohibited chemicals list for 3rd party vendors that matches its RSL & MRSL. -Additionally, Amazon should indicate through a label on the website to consumers which 3rd party vendors have matched or exceeded Amazon’s RSL & MRSL (when implemented) so that consumers are able to make informed decisions about the products they are purchasing. Amazon needs to respect US workers: - Address high injury rates with a particular focus on urgently reducing the extraordinarily high rate of serious injuries for warehouse workers & delivery drivers experience. Amazon should engage workers in this process & take their recommendations on how to best improve safety. - End the practice of time off tasks & end unrealistic quotas. This includes ending the quotas for delivery drivers & those working in warehouses. - End all retaliatory practices, including punishing or firing workers that vocalize concerns. - Address employment discrimination. Numerous individuals from protected classes have alleged experiencing discriminatory practices while working for the company. Amazon must work to understand why these practices are occurring, address the disparities, & ensure no future discrimination occurs. Thank you for your consideration,
