Tell Congress: Stop Big Banks from Funding Fossil Fuels

As the world experiences the hottest temperatures in all human history, big banks continue to shovel money into fossil-fuel projects. Since the Paris Agreement, the four largest U.S. banks have invested $1.4 TRILLION into more fossil fuels.

Thankfully, Sen. Ed Markey (MA) and Reps. Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib (MI) have reintroduced the Fossil Free Finance Act (FFFA). The act would require big banks to cut financing of greenhouse gas pollution 50% by 2030 and stop all financing by 2050.

But if we want the FFFA to gain traction in Congress, we need a lot more co-sponsors.

As your constituent, I urge you to co-sponsor the Fossil Free Finance Act.

I’m alarmed by the climate crisis — and by U.S. banks’ refusal to align their financing with a future that’s safe for humanity. Instead, big banks continue to gamble on dirty energy projects that put our communities and our financial system at risk.

Congress has the power to rein in big banks. The Fossil Free Finance Act would require banks with over $50 billion in assets to:

-Stop financing new or expanded fossil fuel projects after 2023.

-Cut their financing of greenhouse gas pollution 50% by 2030 and stop all financing of fossil fuels by 2050.

-Prioritize ending funding for projects that harm already-vulnerable communities at the frontlines of the climate crisis.

Big banks like Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank, and Bank of America continue to make empty climate commitments while pouring billions of dollars every year into polluting industries that threaten financial stability and destabilize communities. Since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015, big banks have collectively financed at least $4.5 trillion in fossil fuels.

Shifting money from risky fossil fuel investments by requiring science-based transition plans will protect our economy from a major threat to financial stability.

Please take climate risks to the financial system seriously and co-sponsor the Fossil Free Finance Act.
